Stay tuned for future posts where will will have some more moving hacks to share.

Plan ahead.

Moving can be stressful - especially if you leave things to the last minute.

Packing up everything within your home can seem like a daunting task but it is very manageable when done in stages. If you start planning a month ahead and pack a box or two per day before work, it’s much less stressful than having to take time off of work in the days before your move. It helps to have a checklist for changing your address (driver’s license, utilities, banking information, subscriptions etc.) and crossing off items as you count down to the big day.

Bonus points: Book movers 4-6 weeks in advance and finish packing before moving day.

Moving is the best time to de-clutter.

This tip is especially important for those who have lived in the same place for more than a few years as everything adds up over time. A lot of items accumulate as children grow up and your home is decorated. Consider purging broken items that sat in the garage and donate items of value to those who can use them. Only pack items that you intend to use or keep so that you don’t end up with hundreds of boxes then featured on a TV show about hoarders.

Bonus points: Aim for less than 50 boxes.

That is... Box size matters!

Try to use only 2-3 box or container sizes throughout your move.

Many big box stores and storage facilities sell moving supplies. Using regular moving boxes/bins makes stacking, storing and transporting much easier. It is a lot easier to carry standard moving boxes than Kleenex boxes (it has happened) which results in fewer trips up stairs, meaning that your move is completed faster and you can spend your time doing something that you enjoy.

Bonus points: Label all boxes so that your movers can put them into their desired room.

Empty dressers, cabinets and desks.

Removing clothing from drawers, shelving from book shelves and odds and ends from desks and cabinets makes them lighter. If your furniture is lighter, it decreases the risk for injury and damage to the furniture and your home.

Bonus points: Disassemble beds, tables, etc. before moving day to save time

Hire reputable movers.

Moving heavy boxes and furniture can be exhausting. Friends and family may not know how to navigate tight corners and moving day is stressful enough without holes in walls and strained relationships. Professionals movers work faster, have experience and accountability when it comes to moving your valuable possessions. Always search your potential moving company’s business name and phone number online then look for reviews. Evaluate the reviews by the source and reading the comments to see if they are genuine [star ratings without a comment tend to be written by friends]. Look to see if the moving company has a social media presence and real photos of their staff.

Bonus points: Hire Brawny Movers for the best moving experience.
