When you live in Southcrest, sometimes you find even describing the area to other Londoners a bit tricky. It's almost like the buffer between Old South and Westmount, but Southcrest is a fantastic area in it's own right, if not the biggest or most populated area in London it is a large zone and has several diverse areas.
Bordered by the Thames River to the North, Wonderland Road to the West, Wharncliffe Road to the East and Commissioners Road to the South this community is situated close to downtown, parks, nature and shopping.
In this area you will find primarily well build mid century ranch style homes on large lots with mature trees. In the western most part of the area some century homes and cottages are peppered in on streets with diverse housing styles and many dead end streets running towards the protected ESA.
In the eastern "Berkshire Village" area there are many townhouse rentals (many are Sifton built and are still managed/rented by Sifton- a London Based developer), and townhouse condos. There are also several high rise condos available along Baseline Road.
In the north-eastern "coves" area a unique mobile home community is bordered by the oxbow (a water feature left by the river).
North of Springbank is Kensal Park- a quiet area with some older homes, some extremely large lots and many backing onto the parklands, Woodland cemetery or the coves.
The Coves Environmentally Significant Area provides a lush naturescape for residents. From impressive views of downtown- a diverse community of animals and birds in the ravine and grasslands and a beautiful set of paths that is currently being expanded.
Residents of this area enjoy easy access to downtown (5-10 minute commute downtown) the 400 series highway (particularly with the new Wonderland Road access to the 401), a major shopping distract at Wonderland and Southdale (5 minute drive), many schools (Catholic French First Language, Public Elementary, French Immersion and Public High School all in this area).
This neighbourhood is in a transitional phase, with older original owners selling their 2-3 bedroom ranch homes to younger families. The homes typically found in this area are well built, on nice large lots and offer a great value, but may require some cosmetic or other updating for new buyers.
The announcement of the new Westmount YMCA is a welcome addition to the Southwest part of town and will provide an additional resource to this community.
Southcrest is lucky enough to boast one of London's largest outdoor public swimming pools. The pool is staffed by city staff during the summer months and has separate diving wells and wading pool.
